About the Virginia Production Alliance

The Virginia Production Services Association was founded in 1988 as the first organization dedicated to supporting the state’s film and video industry. The members of that organization had a significant impact on the growth of the production industry, and played key roles in numerous important initiatives including securing incentive funds for production and the Sales and Use Tax Exemption.

As the industry grew and developed, a need arose for an organization that would embrace all aspects of a rapidly changing industry and creative community. The Virginia Production Alliance was thus formed as a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 6 corporation and adopted the following mission statement:

"Uniting film, video, audio and new media in Virginia."

From actors to crew, from post production to screenwriting, and from film, video, and audio to new media – everyone with an interest in the creation of moving images are invited to be a part of the VPA.

The VPA as it exists today is committed to providing events, programs, services, and information that benefit the industry and its members. These include seminars, workshops, screenings, happy hours, mentoring programs, and political initiatives. The kinds of efforts that the VPA can accomplish are limited only by the time and resources provided by its membership, its board, and the industry itself.

The VPA is also working to develop partnerships with organizations throughout the state that have similar goals. We currently work with such groups as Yellow House, the Richmond Ad Club, the Virginia Screenwriters Forum, the Virginia Actors Forum and the Virginia Film Office.

Recent successes led by the VPA include the passage of the Digital Media Bill by the General Assembly in February 2009 and it’s signing by Governor Tim Kaine in April 2009. The Digital Media Bill is a ground-breaking piece of legislation designed to generate fees from in-room digital media downloads for the Motion Picture Opportunity Fund. This legislation could not have been possible without the combined efforts of an engaged production community who urged their lawmakers to support media and film in the Commonwealth. With more support from the state government comes more jobs and production for talent and crew.
